Preventing Swine Flu:
Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs

Good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the
spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. There also are flu antiviral drugs
that can be used to treat and prevent the flu.

1. Avoid Close Contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to
protect them from getting sick too.

2. Stay Home When You Are Sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school, public gatherings, and errands when you are sick. You will help
prevent others from catching your illness.

3. Cover Your Mouth and Nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you
from getting sick.

4. Clean Your Hands.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand
cleaners are also effective.

5. Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose or Mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then
touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

6. Practice Other Good Health Habits.
Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious
food.

Mandy Quatto Bircher

After battling with undiagnosed symptoms for several weeks, on March 11, 2009 Mandy was diagnosed and hospitalized with a rare nervous system disorder known as Guillain-Barre’ Syndrome. This disorder attacked her fast and hard. Mandy is in the intensive care unit suffering from paralysis and temporarily being assisted by a respirator. Mandy will have to undergo extensive physical and occupational therapy. Due to the uncertainty of her recovery time, it is unclear when she will be able to return back to work.

Longwall Committee Meeting

For the past few months I have been gathering together with a small group of voters from Leef Township to discuss the effects of longwall mining. Our next upcoming meeting will be on April 6th at 7 p.m. at the township building in Marine. Seating is limited but everyone is welcome.
Since we all lead very busy lives I have developed this committee with the hopes that a small group of individuals can meet and then help spread the word to others. I know it is hard to attend for many of you and with the nice weather quickly approaching it may become even more difficult. Marine Polling Place

Please note a change in venue for the upcoming local election on April 7th. All voters in Marine will now be voting at the Marine Fire House. The Marine Senior Citizens building will no longer be used for voting. We are able to save money by consolidating the voters into one building. Please contact me with any questions you may have.

Longwall committee meeting

Last night a group of residents from Bond, Clinton and Madison County met in Leef Township to discuss the effects of longwall mining. We had a great turnout and we were able to discuss quite a few aspects. I hope to have a monthly meeting to discuss how to help residents with longwall issues. A day for Evan

Join us on June 1st at "A Day For Evan!"
Evan is a two year old boy that is battling eye cancer. We are having a family fun day at the Marine Fireman's Park from Noon to 6p.m. There will be B.B.Q., pony rides, face painting, a petting zoo, Harvey the Juggler, and much more!
Be sure and buy some raffle tickets at my office in Marine for your chance to win a Wii or many other great prizes!

This is an event for the whole community to enjoy and it's for a great cause.

A big thanks to all of the supporters that helped put the campaign over the top! We won!!! And now... we get to do it all over again in November:)

Welcome!

In July 2007, I was appointed as the Madison County Board Member for District 4. Dr. Robert Daiber who had previously held that position for over five years nominated me after he accepted the position of Regional Superintendent of Schools. I had always aspired to hold a political office to serve my fellow citizens, and I was very excited to accept the nomination. Dr. Daiber is also endorcing me as a candidate in the upcoming election.

As you may know, I am very proud to be born and raised in Marine, IL. I am very active in our community with such activities as coordinating the Marine Lights in the Park, volunteering at the Marine Homecoming, and participating in the local chapter of Relay for Life. I have also been involved in many other local events.

As a business owner, and someone who has been active in my community, I believe I have a good understanding of the diverse needs of the people in Madison County and will work on their behalf.

As a current Board Member, I believe in improving our schools and infrastructure and supporting our local businesses. I have made myself available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to the people of Madison County. When a neighbor had questions regarding her property tax assessment, I had her come in to my office and I explained, line by line, which amounts were County taxes and which where state taxes. I then gave her specific contact information to voice her concerns regarding the state taxes. When a neighbor had concerns of a new development near her property, I visited her and spoke with her directly about the plans so that she knew what to expect. It is this type of service that I will continue to provide as a Member of the County Board.

As you can see, I am very dedicated and excited about the opportunity to serve the people of District 4 on the Madison County Board. But, in order to continue, I must conduct a very aggressive campaign. My opponent in the primary election this February is well known in the community. But I believe the voters of District 4 deserve someone strongly committed to working towards the benefit of the entire district. This is why I am the best person to serve the people of this district.
